Visit Sofia

Sofia is worth visiting. Delicious food, nice architecture, the prices are rather low, people mind their own business. The city has a particular beauty, mostly given by its old buildings. Ignore the urban leftovers from the communist times.

To be honest, Sofia seemed to me much more friendly than Bucharest, even if sometimes I felt like traveling a little back in time. In Bucharest, chaos rules and road traffic is awful, but Sofia has a specific serenity that one can taste it in just a couple of days.

Innovation

See below a Romanian solution to a German vehicle’s problem: just put in there a PET bottle. It’s green, so it’s eco friendly :)) At least, it is a Mercedes bus. In Bucharest.

Peripheral Romania

While the European Union is on the way to function on a multiple-speeds formula, I must say, dear Bruxelles bureaucrats, Romania has been far ahead on this path. Here, the state apparatus is lagging behind evolutions which have been altering the society for quite some time.

Take migration within the EU borders, for example. For millions of Romanians, cities, even neighborhoods, from Spain or Italy have become familiar names of places, while the Romanian municipalities barely acknowledge, in a formal way, this phenomena. To take advantage or to extract some benefits out of this … it is already a utopic idea. To reverse this process … it is out of the question. Perhaps, this lack of reaction on behalf of the municipalities is related to the electoral process … those who left don’t vote, if they don’t vote, they don’t exist.

Altogether, the Romanian public institutions form the picture of a suburbia of the European Union. Their overall performance depicts the image of a periphery of the world. In spite of the widely available high-speed internet connection, Romania is not a country connected with the world, neither economically, nor politically. To pretend anything else it would be sheer demagogy. But the Romanians are.

According to the UN’s statistics on migration flows, Romania has the highest rate of emigration among the countries which are not being affected by any kind of conflict. Here, it is peace and, from time to time, just some political turmoil. Still, people keep fleeing the country, thousands of them, year by year.

60

eu flagThe European Union is 60 years old today and she pretty much looks like a grandma: she has annoying habits, she complains too much about her sufferings, she keeps forgetting where her glasses are, and by the gimpy way she walks it seems she will get nowhere.

Some people say she hasn’t aged beautifully. Others claim she will soon be remembered only by a graveyard stone. Only few dear to remind that we have become grown-ups with her by our side, and her guidance, if not always full of wisdom, was the one which stood up for us in times of sorrow.

Most of the European tend now to take for granted rights and benefits their parents could have only hoped for, and their grandparents couldn’t have even imagined. Perhaps it is nothing but the human nature. But if so, it only shows how slow humans’ mental evolution is. Once again, it is proven the technological progress cannot save us from ourselves.

Is there anyone in this world who would wilfully burry his/her grandma while she is still alive? Not if one is sane. Let us remember the familiar resonance of these words: “the European family”. Let us acknowledge that we are a family despite of what politicians are telling us, and behave accordingly. Care for each other, help each other, teach each other.

Mind that our European grandma has nieces and nephews, all over the Europe. Young people who need this mediocre and boring framework to fulfill their potential. Less awareness on that, more doubt to be inflicted into their minds and souls. We share this European path towards the future, so strive to keep it clean and bright.

Happy birthday, European Union! I love you!

House of Cards

Sometimes cards must fall apart for one to see, in the reflection of the water, what lies beneath the appearances. What is left at the end of day? Ourselves, facing the mirror.
